If we simply take the simplest definition of ePortfolios as evidence of meaningful connections to answer why we would want to develop ePortfolios, then the answer would be to make those meaningful connections visible. By collecting, selecting and presenting what they have created, developed, built, written or assembled over a period of time, the portfolio creators would see and show the connections among the collected artifacts, their learning process and outcomes.
There are several reasons you may want to use ePortfolio in your teaching and learning or to use it to support your professional goals, such as receiving recognition and/or promotions. ePortfolio is an excellent tool for documenting your knowledge and skills gained from learning or working. It is also suitable for showcasing your achievements and growth over time.
If you want to dig deeper into why we should incorporate ePortfolios in education, check out this presentation by Dr Helen Chen from Standford University. In this presentation, Helen provides inspiring insight into how ePorfolios could transform student learning. This is optional, so it is fine if you want to skip this video. But I think you might not want to miss it as she really gives valuable insight here.

Below is the list of why I want to use ePortfolios in my classrooms and/or develop my own ePortfolios for personal and professional growth.
To allow students to reflect on their collected artifacts and yet enhance their learning
To evaluate students’ authentic abilities, including learning in progress;
To enable iterative feedback where I can provide feedback to students on their work in progress and observe how they respond to my feedback;
To document successful projects;
To reflect on my action research projects;
To prove skills and competencies for certifications;
To make my applications stand out in the competitions such as scholarship applications, grant applications and Teaching Excellence Award;
To see my professional growth over time;
To allow me to collect and organise evidence of teaching and learning
To share with future employers and get hired;
To share with my supervisors and/or evaluation committee to get promotions
To share my life story with my family members
Would you mind sharing why you may use ePortfolios in your classrooms or create portfolios yourself in the comment box below? Thanks for sharing
